Michael was born on 20 March 1970, in New York City, to a New York radio personality, June Brody and a radio executive, David Rapaport. He is of Polish and Russian descent and is a Jewish.
He shared the early childhood with his brother, Eric Rapaport and his half-sister, Claudia Lonow, from his father’s prior marriage. After Michael’s parents parted ways with one another, his mother married Mark Lonow, the co-owner of The Improv. Michael later moved to the Upper East Side of Manhattan and grew up there.
As of his educational background, Michael joined Erasmus Hall High School in the 1980s but got expelled later on. After the expulsion, he went to New York and completed his schooling from Martin Luther King High School.

While growing up in the upper side of Manhattan, Michael always aspired to become a stand –up comedian. In 1989, he left his home and went to Los Angeles, California to follow his dreams. Subsequently, he worked as standup comedian under his step dad’s company, The Improv( co-owned by Budd Friedman) for three years. Immediately, he gained exposure to the screen through the television show, China Beach in 1990.
Two years later, Michael appeared in his first movie named Zebra Head. After that, he only moved forward to work on various TV shows and movies. Some of his works include True Romance (1993), Higher Learning(1995), Metro(1997), Blue Sea (1999), Friends (1999), The Girl’s life (2003), Hitch (2005), and Prison Break (2008-09).

In addition to that, Michael directed a documentary based on a hip-hop act called Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest in 2011. It was highly praised and won various awards and nominations. Besides, he appeared as Mike Wegman on an American animated sitcom, The Simpsons in 2019. He is currently working on the TV show, Atypical as the main character Doug Gardener. Besides, he hosts I Am Rapaport Stereo Podcast in CBS local radio network and also narrates WWE 365 series.
